Lions drop SSC opener at Midwestern State

WICHITA FALLS, TX. -- Missouri Southern fell behind Southwest Soccer Conference preseason favorite Midwestern State early in the match and never could catch up as the Indians tripped up the Lions 5-0 Friday night (Sept. 8) in the SSC opener for both squads.

The Indians enjoyed great scoring balance, with each of their five scores coming from five different players.

MWSU didn't waste any time jumping on top of Southern, as Sun Potter netted his fourth goal of the season just 2:37 into the match for the early one goal lead.

Daniel Brown then scored in the 33rd minute of play to give Midwestern a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.

The Indians held the two goal advantage until Brandon Swartzendruber scored in the 65th minute of the second half.

Midwestern then capped off the night when Marco Harleman and Daniel Goss recorded tallies just over one minute apart in the 86th and 87th minute of action.

The Indians dominated the Lions by out-shooting Southern 21-3 overall and 13-2 in shots-on-goal.

Senior goalkeeper Travis Haight (Sioux Falls, S.D.) made eight stops for the Lions, while Sean Gill made one save in the first half for the Indians before giving way to Sean Gill in the second stanza.  Gill also recorded one save for Midwestern.

Missouri Southern will look to get on the winning track by returning home for a non-conference date with Avila (Mo.) Tuesday night (Sept. 12) at Hal Bodon Field.  The match will begin at 7 p.m.
