Lions gain first win in dramatic fashion

Joplin, Mo. --The Missouri Southern Lions notched their first victory of the 2006 season by knocking off the Truman Bulldogs as Neil Stoessel (Papillion, Neb.) scored on a penalty kick 4:32 into the first overtime period for a 1-0 Lions win.

Truman's Dan Gajewski committed a foul in the box that prompted the penalty kick as Southern improved to 1-6-2 on the season, while dropping the Bulldogs to 4-3-2 overall.

Neither team had many scoring opportunities despite combining for 23 shots through the first two periods of play.

The best scoring opportunity for the Lions in regulation came when Brett Kohler (Waterloo, Ill.) nailed a shot that went off the crossbar in the 19th minute of the second half.

That opportunity was soon followed by a Bulldogs scoring chance as a shot from Truman's Josh Weir went just wide of the net.

Truman led the Lions 13-11 overall in shot-attempts, but the Lions held a slim 3-2 edge in shots-on-goal, including the game-winning penalty kick.

Lions goalkeeper Travis Haight (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Truman goalie Chris Kirkweg each made two saves in the match.

Missouri Southern will continue non-conference action by hosting Quachita Baptist on Wednesday night (Sept. 27).  Start time is set for 5 p.m. at Hal Bodon Field.
