Kirksville, Mo.. --
Corey Bailey scored two goals as the Missouri-Rolla Miners handed the
Missouri Southern Lions their first loss of the season, 3-0 Saturday
afternoon (Sept. 1) in Kirksville, Mo.
Each of Bailey's goals came off an assist from Mario Calderon. The first
occurred at the end of the first half in the 43rd minute as Bailey put
in a shot from 18 yards out on a cross from Calderon that gave UMR a 1-0
lead at the half.
The Lions (2-1) kept the match only a one-goal deficit much of the way
until Bailey found the net again as he headed in a pass from Calderon in
the 84th minute to put the Miners (2-0) up by two scores.
UMR's final tally of the day was on a successful free kick by Brad
Hippisley only three minutes later that just skipped off MSSU goalkeeper
Jon Hansen's fingertips.
Southern failed to get much offense going by recording 10 shot-attempts,
but only one shot-on-goal.
The Miners out-shot the Lions 18-10 overall. Senior Neil Stoessel
(Papillion, Neb.) led the Lions with four shots.
MSSU will play again in Kirksville tomorrow (Sept. 2), this time against
host Truman State at 2 p.m.
