Newman rallies for 2-1 win over Lions

Joplin, Mo. -- Brian Alvarez scored two goals seven minutes apart late in the second half as the Newman Jets rallied for a 2-1 win over the Missouri Southern Lions in non-conference action Saturday night (Sept. 27) at Hal Bodon Field.

Alvarez's first goal evened the match at 1-1 off a cross from Pablo Molina just two yards away in the 78th minute.

Alvarez then gave the Jets (4-5-1) the lead at the 85:38 mark when a shot from Thiago Baby glanced off of his back and into the net.

The Lions (0-9-1) grabbed the early lead when Austin Whiles fed Lawrence Lartey in the 23rd minute to put Southern up 1-0.

Newman out-shot the Lions 9-7 overall but the shots-on-goal were even at 2-2.

Ben Pantzlaff and Kevin Aubuchon each had two shots to lead the Lions.

The Lions will have another non-conference matchup at Missouri S&T on Thursday evening (Oct. 2) at 5 p.m. in Rolla, Mo.
