MSSU's Turner honored on all-region team

JOPLIN, Mo. - Angie Turner, a freshman catcher on the Missouri Southern State University softball team, was named to the second-team All-North Central Region squad announced Thursday (May 11) after voting conducted by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).

Turner joined Northwest Missouri State's Nicole Krueger, Southwest Minnesota State's Amanda Johnson and South Dakota's Tagney Jones as the only freshmen from around the region named to the team.

Turner, one of six Lions to start all 40 games in 2006, led the Lions in numerous offensive categories, including batting (.364), runs (18), hits (43), triples (3), home runs (4), slugging (.576), walks (22) and on-base percentage (.464).

The lone freshman on the first-team All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) squad announced earlier this week, Turner also finished second on the team with seven doubles and 16 RBI and paced the team with 12 multi-hit games. Her 11-game hitting streak, March 7-25, was also a team season-best. Turner finished 10th in the MIAA in batting and third in walks.

Behind the plate, Turner threw out 15 runners attempting to steal.

Missouri Southern finished 17-23 in head coach Aron Potter's first season at the helm.
