Lions go 1-2 in day one at Pittsburg State Tournament

The Missouri Southern Lions came from behind to defeat Central Missouri 7-6 in game one of the Pittsburg State Tournament, but dropped two extra inning contests to Bellevue College (5-4) and Nortwestern Oklahoma State University (7-5) today.

Kate Brittan waited till the top of the seventh inning to pick up her only hit of the game, but it proved to be a big one as she singled into center field, driving in Kayleigh Cecil and JT Taylor for the go ahead runs in a 7-6 win over Central Missouri. Tamika Barnes picked up her second win of the year in relief of Lacee Craig.

Racheal Bowen went 2-4 with three RBIs, while Amanda Godfrey drove in two and scored once. Cecil scored twice.

Southern held a 4-0 lead going into the bottom of the sixth before Bellevue plated four unearned runs to tie the game and send it into extra innings. In the eighth, Bellevue would pick up another unearned run to defeat the Lions 5-4.

Barnes threw six innings, striking out four and allowing just four unearned runs. Craig picked up the loss, allowing just that lone hit in the eighth. Angie Turner hit two home runs and three RBIs scoring twice in the game.

Both teams scored three runs in the third inning tonight against Northwestern Oklahoma State. The Lions tied the game with a run in the top of the seventh and went ahead with a run in the top of the eighth, before Northwestern hit a walk-off two run homer in the eighth to win the game, 7-5.

Turner hit her third homer of the day, fifth of the year, going 2-2 with two RBIs and a run scored. Emily McPeters hit her first homer of the year, going 2-5 with two RBIs and a run scored.

The Lions will face off with Pittsburg State tomorrow at 9 am in pool b bracket play. The winner will advance to the bracket championship game played at 2:45 pm and the loser playing in the consolation game at 12:30 pm.
