Joplin, Mo  -
The Missouri Southern softball team dropped a pair of one run games to top 25 teams today, losing 5-4 to 21st ranked Nebraska-Omaha and 1-0 to 19th ranked Northeastern State.

Southern (7-14) fell behind early against UNO, allowing two runs in both the first and second innings. Game one starter Lacee Craig threw an inning and two thirds, but was chased from the game after a hit, two walks an error and a hit by pitch led to two runs in the second. Tamika Barnes came in to the game and threw five and a third innings, allowing just one run and striking out four.

The Lions answered back with a run in the fourth and two in the fifth. An RBI single from Kayleigh Cecil in the fourth scored Angie Turner after Turner had doubled to lead off the inning. UNO scored another run in the fifth, but the Lions responded with two of their own. Racheal Bowen singled down the left field line, scoring Kate Brittan, and Cecil added another RBI single, scoring Turner. Southern scored a late run in the seventh after Turner reached on her third double of the game and Cecil drove her home.

Turner was 3-3 with three doubles and three runs scored. Cecil drove in three on two hits, while Bowen added an RBI and two hits. Craig allowed just two earned runs, while Barnes struck out four.

Craig came back in fine form in game two against 19th ranked NSU. The sophomore threw a complete game, allowing just one unearned run, and at one point retired eight batters in a row.

Both starting pitchers threw gems and the game was scoreless until the top of the sixth when the Lady Reds plated an unearned run allowing Brandy Kimberlin to score on an error.

Craig scattered six hits and struck out two in the loss. Turner and Andrea Childs both had hits in the game.

Southern will head to Topeka on Tuesday to take on Washburn in a double-header beginning at 1 pm.
