FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Pittsburg, Kan. --
Lacee Craig threw a complete game shutout in game one, leading the
Lions to a 2-0 win, but it was a five-run third in game two that
helped Pittsburg State take the nightcap in a conference
double-header tonight.
Southern (8-19, 1-5 MIAA) scored two
runs in the third inning of game one as Craig struck out four and
walked none, scattering five hits for the win.
Kelli Bax walked to start the inning and
was sacrificed to second by Amanda Godfrey. Kate Brittan singled to
center moving Bax to third and Brittan moved up on a ground out.
After PSU walked Angie Turner to load the bases, Racheal Bowen
singled to left, scoring both Bax and Brittan for the game's only
runs.
Craig earned her fifth win of the
season, while Bowen drove in two. Turner had two hits in the game.
Southern scored first in game two, but a
five run third for the Gorillas was all PSU would need.
After leading off the third with a
single, Tamika Barnes moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Bax. She moved to third when Emily McPeters reached on a bunt single
and scored when Angie Turner reached on an error by the shortstop.
PSU (14-18, 1-3 MIAA) scored five runs
on five hits in the third and added a run in each of the fifth and
sixth innings. A late run in the sixth on an Andrea Childs RBI
single would make the final score 7-2.
The Lions will be back in action this
weekend, first playing host to a double-header with Lincoln on
Friday beginning at 3:30 pm. The two teams will be continuing a
previous game that was called due to rain with the Lions winning 2-0
in the third. The two teams will then play another double-header on
Saturday beginning at 2 pm.
