Maryville, Mo. -- The
Missouri Southern softball team got a 5-1 victory in game one, but a
walk-off homer from Northwest Missouri gave the Bearcats a 3-2 win
in the nightcap and the two teams split a double-header today in
Maryville. Southern (11-27, 2-10 MIAA) scored a run in the third and four in the fourth, while Lacee Craig struck out a season-high nine batters and allowed just one run for the 5-1 victory in game one. Amanda Godfrey singled to center with one out to start the third inning rally. Sam Neely followed that up with a single to center of her own and Emily McPeters doubled home Godfrey for the game's first run. The Lions kept the scoring going in the fourth when Chasidy Austin singled to start the inning and moved up to second when Racheal Bowen laid down a sacrifice bunt. Kayleigh Cecil singled moving Austin to third and Andrea Childs walked to load the bases. JT Taylor singled home Austin and Neely reached on an error by the second baseman. Both Childs and Cecil scored on the play. Taylor scored on a wild pitch later in the inning. McPeters had two hits and an RBI. Taylor was 1-3 with a run and RBI, while Neely, Childs, Cecil, Austin and Godfrey had a hit apiece. Craig allowed just four hits in the win, but the Lions returning All-MIAA catcher Angie Turner went down with an injury in the second inning. The Lions scored first in game two and tied it at two with a run in the fifth, but a home run from the Bearcats' Lindsey Stephenson gave Northwest a split in the series. McPeters singled with an out in the first inning and advanced to second on a ground out. She scored after Racheal Bowen reached on an error. Northwest (20-13, 7-5 MIAA) got a run in the second and fourth, before a homer from McPeters in the fifth tied things at two. McPeters was 2-2 with two runs and an RBI, including her second home run of the season. Neely had the Lions' lone other hit. Tamika Barnes went six innings, striking out two and scattering seven hits. The Lions will be back in action this Monday, April 23 when they play host to Southwest Baptist at 3 pm. On Tuesday, the Lions will have a home double-header against sixth ranked Emporia State. The game will be senior day for the Lions two seniors, Racheal Bowen and Missy Clark. |
