FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Joplin, Mo. -- With
one out, a 3-2 count on Kayleigh Cecil and the Lions trailing 3-1 in
the bottom of the seventh inning, the first game of today's
scheduled double-header with sixth ranked Emporia State was
suspended due to heavy rains in the Joplin area. A make-up date and
time has yet to be scheduled. Southern got on the board first when Kate Brittan singled to start the bottom of the first. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Emily McPeters. Sam Neely then singled through the right side and Brittan raced around third to score, putting the Lions up 1-0 after one. Emporia tied the game at one in the third when April Huddleston singled to right scoring Chelsea McLernon. Both pitchers were lights out during the game. Lacee Craig started for the Lions and had two strikeouts through two innings, allowing just that one run in the third. From that point on, Craig shutout the Hornets until the seventh, when Emporia scored two un-earned runs to go ahead 3-1. Emporia starter Courtney Reed allowed two hits and a run in the first, but held the Lions hitless until Amanda Godfrey singled in the bottom of the sixth. Craig went seven, striking out four and allowing just one earned run. Southern will be back in action tomorrow with a non conference double-header at Southwest Baptist. |
