Lions lose three in first day at MSU - Mankato Tournament

Augustana Box | Nebraska-Omaha Box | Mankato Box

Mankato, Minn. -- The Missouri Southern softball team had three tough-luck losses today, losing in extra innings in game one to Augustana, then falling by a combined three runs to nationally ranked Nebraska-Omaha and MSU-Mankato its final two games of the first day in the MSU-Mankato Tournament today.

In game one, Southern (16-31) went up 5-2 after the fourth inning behind the bat of starting pitcher Tamika Barnes. Barnes drove in four in the game and capped it off with a three-run homer to right center in the fourth inning. The Lions, however, would fall in extras as Augustana scored a run in the top of the eighth on a home run.

Barnes was 2-2 with a run and four RBIs in the game. Kate Brittan scored three times.

The Lions scored first against 22nd ranked UNO in their second game of the day. Kate Brittan singled to start the game and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Emily McPeters. Brittan advanced to third on a ground out and scored when Racheal Bowen reached on an error.

That was the only run of the game for the Lions, as UNO got Lacee Craig for three runs, two earned in the game. Craig struck out four and walked just two. Brittan and Chasidy Austin had two hits each with Brittan scoring the lone run.

The Lions fell behind to 14th ranked MSU in the third game of the day, as the Mavericks scored once in each of the fifth and six innings. A late unearned run in the seventh for the Lions wouldn't be enough.

Barnes went 2-4 at the plate and limited MSU to just one earned run in five and a third innings, striking out two. Brittan, Andrea Childs, Bowen and Amanda Godfrey all had a hit in the game.

The Lions will be back at it again tomorrow as they face off with Minnesota-Duluth at 10 am and St. Cloud State at noon.
