FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Mankato, Minn. -- The
busiest week of the season has concluded for the Missouri Southern
softball team, but not in the way the Lions would have liked it as
Southern dropped a double-header to Minnesota-Duluth, 2-0 and St.
Cloud State, 6-1.
Southern (16-33) left six runners on base in game one today as two UMD pitchers combined to shut out the Lions. Kayleigh Cecil went 2-3, while Sam Neely, Chasidy Austin and Amanda Godfrey all had a hit each. Lacee Craig allowed just two runs and five hits, while striking out five in the loss. Southern ran into another tough pitcher in game two as St. Cloud State's Steph Schroeder scattered four hits and struck out five in the win. The Lions went down 2-0 in the second but got a run to cut the lead to one in the bottom half of the inning. Cecil singled to start the inning and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt from Andrea Childs. Cecil would score on a hit from Godfrey. Tamika Barnes started and allowed just five hits, but the Lions made a season-high six errors in the field, leading to four un-earned runs for Barnes and another for Kelli Bax in relief. Barnes struck out three and Bax added a strikeout of her own. Southern will be back in action this Wednesday playing host to Truman State in a double-header at Gene Wild Field at 2 pm.
