Southern softball signs seven for 2008 season

Joplin, Mo. -- Missouri Southern softball coach Aron Potter has announced her second recruiting class, signing six prep standouts and one junior college transfer for the 2008 season.

We are extremely excited about this class," Potter said.  "All of the players are highly talented and will make an immediate impact on our program both on the field and in the classroom. We will be expecting a lot out of this class.

Joining the team in the spring of 2008 will be Lauren Hasty of Broken Arrow, OK, Jessica Johnson of Fort Smith, AR, Megan Roark of Seneca, MO, Krystin Rakes of Seneca, MO, Tara Kuykendall of Edmond, OK, Trish Washburn of St. Charles, MO and Lauryn Berger of LaGrange, Texas.

Lauren Hasty

Hasty, a 5  2  catcher, is the daughter of David and Jeanna Hasty and attends Broken Arrow High School.  Lauren, who will major in Kinesiology, also participated in track and volleyball in high school.   Lauren is a great addition to our MSSU squad,  Potter said.   She is a very athletic catcher and a leader behind the plate.  She has a good arm, great reactions and is very agile.

Jessica Johnson

Currently attending Fort Smith Southside High School, Jessica is the daughter of Steve and Teresa Johnson.  She will major in Science (genetics) at Missouri Southern.  A 5  7  outfielder, she was an all-conference selection for Southside.   I love Jessica s hard work and competitive attitude,  said Potter.

Megan Roark

Roark is a 5  7  left-handed catcher from Seneca High School.  Megan, the daughter of Brian and Angie Roark, is undecided about her major at this time.  Megan was named all-conference three times and to the all-district team twice.  She was a member of the 2006 Class 3 state runner-up Seneca High School Indians.   Roark is a threat at the plate,  Potter said.   We hope that she continues that power hitting at MSSU.

Krystin Rakes

Rakes, the daughter of Bryon and Trish Rakes, played shortstop for the 2006 Class 3 state runner-up Seneca High School Indians.  Krystin is planning to seek a nursing degree at Missouri Southern.  Rakes is a two-time Joplin Globe All-Area first team member.   Krystin is a true competitor and a great softball player,  Potter said.   Her versatility is an added benefit.

Tara Kuykendall

Tara is a 5  8  left-handed pitcher from Edmond, Oklahoma.  The daughter of Bill and Leigh Kuykendall, she is currently attending Santa Fe High School.  Tara was a first-team all-region selection, an all-conference selection, and named a first team All-Edmond selection.  Kuykendall plans to major in education at Missouri Southern State University.   Kuykendall will be a definite force in the pitching circle,  Potter said.   She has all of the tools necessary to be a top pitcher in the MIAA.  She is a lefty with great movement.  She has proven that she can hold her own, pitching against some of the best teams in Oklahoma.

Trish Washburn

Washburn, the daughter of Roy and Stephanie Washburn, played first base for the Fort Zumwalt West High School in O Fallon, Missouri.  Washburn was a four year starter for the Gateway Athletic Conference South and district champion Jaguars.  Trish is planning on a major in nursing at Missouri Southern State University.   We are very excited that Trish has chosen Missouri Southern to continue her softball career,  said Potter.   We hope she continues to mature as a player and will become the force in the MIAA that we know she can be.

Lauryn Berger

Berger attended La Grange High School in La Grange, Texas where she was named to the 2005 Academic All State team. The 5 9  infielder, most recently she attended Independence Community College in Independence, Ks.
