FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Joplin, Mo. - The Missouri Southern softball team fell victim to sloppy play in the field as seven errors led to 11 un earned runs and the Lions dropped a pair today to visiting Henderson State. The game one final was 10-7, while game two was 10-8. Southern (1-6) fell behind early in game one as the Lady Reddies (15-4) scored four un earned in the first. The Lions stormed right back, though, and Angie Turner hit a three run homer to left field to cut the lead to one (4-3). Four more HSU runs in the second, two earned, gave the Lady Reddies an 8-3 lead after two. The Lions would add on one in the third, two in the fourth and one in the sixth, but it wouldn't be enough. Kelli Bax went 3-4 with two runs scored in game one. Julie Taylor had two hits and three RBIs. Tara Kuykendall started and threw two innings, allowing just two earned runs. Tamika Barnes threw five innings of relief and struck out six, allowing just one earned. HSU would strike first in game two with a run in the top of the second, but the Lions would tie it right back with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning. The Lady Reddies scored two more in each of the third and fourth innings to go up 5-1, but the Lions would explode for five runs in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead 6-5. With one out and the bases loaded, Megan Roark walked for the first run of the inning. Julie Taylor then came through with the big hit, doubling to right center to score both Turner and Amanda Godfrey. Andrea Childs then doubled home both Roark and Taylor for the fourth and fifth runs of the inning. The lead would be short-lived as HSU answered back with a five spot of its own in the top of the sixth to push back ahead 10-6. The Lions would add two more in the seventh off of a homer from Roark to lead off the inning and another late run from Taylor. Taylor had two hits, two RBIs and scored three times in the game. Roark drove in two and scored twice. Kuykendall started and went four innings, allowing just one earned run, while striking out three. Barnes picked up the loss in relief, while Bax threw one and a third innings, allowing just one hit. The Lions will be back in action tomorrow
and Sunday, competing in the Pittsburg State Tournament.
