Lions drop conference double-header to Fort Hays

Game One Box | Game Two Box

Joplin, Mo. -
The Missouri Southern softball team dropped both ends of a double-header today, losing 6-5 in game one and 9-1 in game two to Fort Hays State at Gene Wild Field in Joplin.

The Lions (4-18, 1-3 MIAA) trailed early in game one, going down 4-1 after the top of the fourth inning. Southern, however, scored two in the bottom half of the inning to cut the Lady Tigers' (22-15, 2-2 MIAA) lead to one at 4-3. Julie Taylor singled and then stole second to lead off the inning. Andrea Childs singled to the left side, putting runners at first and second. Tamika Barnes tried to sacrifice the runners up a base, but the throw was dropped by the first baseman and everyone was safe with Taylor rounding third to score. Kayleigh Cecil then hit a deep fly to center to sacrifice home Childs.

After Hays scored twice more in the top of the fifth, the Lions answered back with two runs of their own in the inning. Taylor started the inning off with a hit and Childs and Barnes walked behind her to load the bases. Cecil singled home Taylor and Lauren Hasty picked up an RBI the hard way, taking a pitch off the helmet to force home Childs. That would be as close as the Lions would get.

Cecil drove in three with two hits, while Childs had two hits and scored twice. Taylor went 2-4 with two runs and Angie Turner was 2-4, as well.

Southern trailed 1-0 after three innings in game two, but the Lady Tigers broke open the game with a five-run fifth inning to go up 6-0. Hays added two runs in the sixth to go up 8-0, before Julie Taylor picked up her second home run of the season in the bottom half of the inning, slamming a pitch over the center field wall. FHSU added one more run in the seventh.

Taylor went 1-3 with an run and an RBI, while Turner picked up another two hits.

The Lions will be back in action on Monday afternoon, playing host to Southwest Baptist in a double-header, beginning at 4 pm.
