FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Southern (6-28, 3-11 MIAA) allowed a run in the top of the first in the opener, but answered with a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning when Angie Turner doubled home Danielle Fuller. Fuller had singled earlier in the inning. Northwest (26-17, 9-7 MIAA) won its fourth game in a row with the double-header sweep. The Bearcats added a run in the third, two in the fourth and another in the seventh of the first game. Pitcher Cola Krueger held the Lions bats silent, allowing just three hits and that one run in the first. Tamika Barnes started for the Lions and went six and a third, striking out three and walking none. Kelli Bax finished the game on the mound. Fuller, Turner and Bax all had hits for Southern. The Lions jumped out on top of game two, scoring a run in the fourth inning. Julie Taylor walked to lead off the inning and Kayleigh Cecil doubled to center to put runners at second and third. Megan Roark then singled through the left side to score Taylor. The Bearcats answered back with a big fifth inning, scoring four in the frame and later adding a single run in the sixth. Fuller, Turner, Cecil, Taylor and Roark all had hits in game two as Northwest starter Kelly Morris scattered five hits over seven innings to get the win. The Lions will now head north to take on Truman in a double-header Monday afternoon in Kirksville. Southern will finish the regular season on Wednesday with a twin-bill at Southwest Baptist. |
