FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Southern (8-30, 5-13 MIAA) got on top in game one scoring a run in the first, another in the third and one more in the fourth. With one out, Bax walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Angie Turner singled to right moving putting runners on the corners and Turner would steal second to put two in scoring position. Bax then scored on a wild pitch to put the Lions up 1-0. SBU (13-25, 3-12 MIAA) picked up a run in the second on a homer from Ashley Loftis. Bax scored again in the third on another wild pitch and Barnes would score the final run in the fourth on an infield single from Amanda Godfrey. Bax went the distance, scattering seven hits and striking out four. Megan Roark went 2-4 while Julie Taylor, Turner, Barnes and Godfrey had hits for the Lions. SBU scored first in game two, picking up a run in the third on an RBI single from Taressa Gomez. The Lions answered back with two in the fourth when Washburn picked up her first collegiate home run to tie it and Julie Taylor put Southern ahead with an inside the park home run. Washburn went deep again in the sixth, again starting the inning with a home run, this time to center. Bax and Roark added RBI singles to put the Lions up 5-1. Taylor would add an RBI double in the seventh for the Lions' final tally. Washburn had the big day at the plate, going 4-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, and hit her first two collegiate home runs. Taylor went 4-5 with a pair RBIs and runs scored, while Andrea Childs and Godfrey both had two hits each. Barnes went the distance and had the exact same pitching line as Bax in game one, scattering seven hits and striking out four, while walking two. |
