Softball splits pair in final day of Arkansas-Monticello Tournament

Monticello, Ark. - The Missouri Southern softball team split a pair of games in the final day of the Arkansas-Monticello tournament today, defeating Ouachita Baptist 6-2 in the opener, but falling to Delta State 4-1 in the nightcap.

Southern (2-4) got the day started right as for the second time in the tournament, both Angie Turner and Whitney Clute homered in the same game, leading the Lions over Ouachita Baptist.

Turner started the scoring with a home run in the first. The Lions scored three runs in the third when Kelli Bax walked with two outs and stole second. Turner was walked and Clute hit her second home run of the season to give the Lions four runs. Amanda Godfrey and Breanna Volkmann singled in the fourth and both moved up on stolen bases but a throwing error allowed Godfrey to score the Lions' fifth run. Turner scored in the seventh on an RBI single from Trish Washburn.

Whitney Clute went the distance to pick up her second win. She scattered six hits and struck out three.

In game two, the Lions scored first, picking up a run in the first to go up 1-0. Delta State, however, tied the game in the fourth and scored three more in the sixth.

The Lions will be back in action on Tuesday, February 17 when they travel to Tahlequah, Okla. to take on Northeastern State in a make-up of the team's original season opener. The double-header will begin at 1 pm.
