Joplin, Mo. -
The Missouri Southern softball team swept both ends of a double-header today with visiting Drury University, winning both games in the Lions' final at bat. Southern took game one 2-1, while taking the nightcap 4-3.

The Lions (11-22) took game one when Andrea Childs' suicide squeeze bunt drove home Kelli Bax who had led off the inning with a bunt single. In the second game, the Lions started off the seventh with another bunt single, this time by Breanna Volkmann. Volkmann moved to second when the throw from the third baseman went over the first basemen's head. Volkmann moved to third on a single from Whitney Clute and scored on a grounder from Megan Roark.

Drury (11-26) tied game one in the top of the fifth, when Tori Whitehead singled home Jessica Mattlock. The Panthers took a 2-0 lead in game two after the first, but the Lions scored three runs in the fifth to go ahead 3-2.

With the bases loaded Andrea Childs was thrown out at home, but the throw from home to first sailed into right field allowing Trish Washburn to move to second and Volkmann to score. Roark then singled through the right side to score Washburn and Clute.

The Panthers tied the game up in the top of the sixth, before the Lions scored the winning run in the seventh.

Kelsey Williams started game one and threw four innings of shutout ball, allowing just three hits. Tara Kuykendall pitched three innings of relief to pick up her fourth win of the season. Bax went 3-3 in the game, scoring two runs. Childs drove in a run.

Roark had three RBIs in game two, while Childs and Clute had two hits each. Volkmann scored two runs and started the game on the mound going three innings and allowing two earned runs. Clute threw the final four innings, allowing just one un-earned run and striking out four for her seventh win of the year.

The Lions will get back into conference play this weekend when they play two games at Southwest Baptist on Friday and a pair at Central Missouri on Saturday.
