Lions win fifth in a row with double-header sweep at SBU

The Missouri Southern softball team won its fifth game in a row and swept a double-header at Southwest Baptist today, winning 10-3 in the opener and 5-2 in the nightcap.

The Lions (13-22, 3-1 MIAA) scored a run in the first of game one, but broke the game open with three in the fourth, two in the fifth and four more in the seventh.

Brooke Hurley had a huge game with a home run, while driving in four and scoring twice. Breanna Volkmann had three hits, while Kelli Bax, Lauryn Berger and Megan Roark had two hits each. Both of Roark's hits were doubles. Trish Washburn scored twice and drove in a run.

Whitney Clute started and went four innings for her eighth win of the year, striking out four and walking just one. Tara Kuykendall pitched three innings of hitless relief for the save. She also drove in two at the plate.

In game two, SBU (16-22, 1-3 MIAA) got on the board first with one in the bottom of the first. The Lions, however, three in the third and two in the fourth. The Bearcats picked up a late run in the seventh.

Andrea Childs, Clute and Roark had two hits each, while Kelli Bax picked up her first home run of the season. Lauren Hasty scored twice, while Volkmann drove in two.

Kelsey Williams picked up her first win of the year going three and a third innings, allowing just one earned run. Kuykendall and Clute pitched the final three and two third innings of relief.

The Lions will be back in action tomorrow when they travel to Central Missouri to take on the Jennies in a double-header at 2 pm.
