FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE The Lions (14-29, 4-6 MIAA) were held hitless through five innings as Washburn (19-24, 6-6 MIAA) starter Samantha Farris was dominating on the mound and the Lady Blues scored a run in the second and three in the third to go up 4-0. Lauryn Berger started the sixth with a single to right field. Natalie Nelson would utilize a bunt single later in the inning to score Randi Russell's first run and Andrea Childs scored in a sacrifice fly from Megan Roark. Childs, Berger and Nelson had the Lions' hits on the day. Farris struck out 11 in seven innings, allowing two unearned runs. Washburn jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first and the Lions scored a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning when Breanna Volkmann scored after Trish Washburn reached on an error. The Lady Blues scored another run in the third, before the Lions picked up two more in the sixth. With one out, Roark singled up the middle and Kelsey Williams reached on an infield error. Washburn then singled up the middle, loading the bases and Kelli Bax singled home Roark. Williams scored on a sacrifice fly from Berger. The Lions had a hit each from six different players and Williams pitched four innings of hitless relief. The Lions will be back in action when they play at Pittsburg State on Tuesday, April 14. The double-header is slated to begin at 5 pm. |
