FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Southern (17-30) scored two runs in the first, two in the third and two in the sixth en route to the game one win. The Lions got on the board first when Brooke Hurley singled to right field, scoring Breanna Volkman, who had singled earlier in the game. NSU (9-33) answered back with four runs of their own to go ahead 4-2 in the second, but the Lions would score two more in the third to tie the game at four. Andrea Childs and Volkmann singled to start the inning, and Childs scored on a Trish Washburn single up the middle. Volkmann then scored on a squeeze bunt from Hurley. The Lions put the game away with two runs in the sixth on RBI singles from Lauryn Berger and Childs. Tara Kuykendall pitched five and a third innings of scoreless relief for her seventh win of the season. She allowed just one hit. Volkmann was 3-3 with two runs scored, while Hurley went 2-3 with a pair of RBIs. Roark added her 12th double of the season. The Lions scored two in the first and one each in the fourth and the fifth of game two. Clute picked up home run number nine on the season in the first driving in Volkmann with a drive to right field. The bomb ties her with current assistant coach Alese Woolard for most home runs in a single-season at Southern. Natalie Nelson had an RBI double in the fourth to score Berger, and Berger picked up an RBI single in the fifth to score Clute. Clute started the game, and went four innings before giving way to Vanessa Elmore. Clute came in to pitch the sixth and the seventh to close out the game. Clute threw a total of six shutout innings, scattering four hits and striking out three. Volkmann again went 3-3 with a run scored, while Clute went 2-3 with a pair of runs and RBIs. Volkmann added her third triple of the season, while Nelson hit her third double. The Lions will jump back into MIAA play this Saturday when they travel to Fort Hays State for a double-header beginning at 1 pm. |
