Softball splits at Fort Hays

Hays, Kan. - Trish Washburn drove in two, and Whitney Clute threw a complete game, allowing just one run as the Missouri Southern softball team split a double-header at Fort Hays State today, winning 4-1, but dropping game two 7-1.

Southern (18-31, 6-8 MIAA) scored all four runs in game one with two outs in the second inning. Kelli Bax singled with an out and moved to second on a wild pitch. She moved to third after a grounder to the right side and then scored when Natalie Nelson reached on an error. Nelson stole second and scored on a single from Andrea Childs and Washburn drove in two later in the inning.

Fort Hays (29-26, 5-9 MIAA) picked up its only run of the game in the sixth on an RBI single from Hallie McMillen.

Childs and Breanna Volkmann had two hits each in the game, while Clute, Washburn and Bax had the other three. Clute went all seven, scattering six hits, allowing just one run and striking out two.

The Lady Tigers scored often and early in game two and led 7-0 after three innings. The Lions scored their lone run of the game in the seventh inning when Bax doubled to start the inning and scored on an RBI single from Childs.

Childs had two hits and an RBI in the game, while Bax, Megan Roark and Brooke Hurley all had doubles and Volkmann added a hit and a stolen base. Tara Kuykendall and Kelsey Williams split time on the mound for the Lions with Williams throwing three and two thirds innings of one hit relief.

The Lions will be back in action this weekend as they go to Missouri Western on Friday and Truman on Saturday.
