Lions softball sweeps Truman to secure a bid in 2009 MIAA Tourney

Kirksville, Mo. - The Missouri Southern softball team swept both ends of a double-header today at Truman and secured a spot in the 2009 MIAA Tournament slated to be played next week in Overland Park, Kan. Game scores were 4-0 and 2-1.

Southern (20-33, 6-10 MIAA) scored all four if its runs in game one in the first three innings and started the scoring when Breanna Volkmann and Whitney Clute singled with Volkmann scoring on an RBI single from Trish Washburn.

The Lions scored another run in the second on an RBI single from Andrea Childs, scoring Natalie Nelson and picked up two in the third when Whitney Clute scored on a single from Megan Roark after leading off the inning with a double. Roark later scored an unearned run.

Truman (11-34, 3-17 MIAA) left four on base and committed two errors in the loss.

Clute had two hits and a run scored, while Roark, Washburn and Childs drove in a run each. Clute started and went the distance for a complete-game shutout, allowing just three hits and striking out two and won her 11th game of the season.

Childs had three of the Lions' six hits in game two as the Lions scored once in the third and fourth to secure the win. Roark drove in Volkmann in the third, while Lauryn Berger drove in Kelli Bax with an RBI single in the fourth.

Tara Kuykendall started and allowed just one run on four hits, while striking out seven and walking none to earn her eighth win of the season.

The Lions will finish up the regular season with a double-header at home against Nebraska-Omaha on Monday at 1 pm at Wild Field.
