FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Lions Roll On Day One Of MSSU Invitational The Missouri Southern volleyball team defeated both Northwest Missouri (3-1) and the University of Missouri-St. Louis (3-0) in day one of the 2006 MSSU Invitational today. Southern (2-0) dropped game one to Northwest (1-1) in the first match today by the score of 30-18. The Lions hit .000 in the game while the Bearcats muscled up a .447 attack percentage. Southern, however, rallied and defeated Northwest 30-15, 30-25, and 31-29 in the final three games to take the match three games to one. Senior transfer Tessa Woods had 16 kills and three blocks, hitting .438. Ashley Mehrer hit .524 and had 13 kills, while Ashley Hill had 17 kills and 20 digs. Sarah Joles had 34 assists and 10 digs, while Amy Barnicle had a match-high 22 digs. Southern kept it up in the nightcap making quick work of UMSL (0-2) in three games. Where as the offense came up strong in the first match of the day, the defense poured it on against the Riverwomen holding UMSL to an .088 attack percentage in game one and negative in the final two games. Game scores were 30-22, 30-16, and 30-20. Hill and Woods each had ten kills with Woods hitting .381. Mehrer hit .389 with nine kills and seven blocks, while Megan Norman had a match-high 16 digs. Joles added 26 assists and five service aces. The Lions, as a team, had 13 aces. Southern continues the tournament tomorrow with a match at noon against the University of Mary and one at 5 p.m. against Henderson State University.
