Lions split in final day, but take home second Tournament Title

Quincy, IL -- The Missouri Southern Lion volleyball team dropped its first match of the season, a 3-1 loss to Missouri -St. Louis, but rebounded and swept Southwest Baptist to finish the Quincy Invitational 3-1, clinching the tournament title.

The Lions (8-1) took game one against UMSL, 30-25, but the Riverwomen came back and won the final three games 30-27, 30-21 and 30-28. Just a weekend ago, Southern swept UMSL at home, but the story was much different this time around as the Lions fell flat offensively, hitting just .139 for the match.

Sarah Hoffmeister (Joplin, Mo./Joplin HS) had 16 kills and 23 digs, while Ashley Mehrer (Kansas City, Mo./Winnetonka HS) and Tessa Woods (Joplin, Mo./Joplin HS) added 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Megan Norman (Stockton, Mo./NEO) had a match-high 26 digs, while Sarah Joles (Blue Springs, Mo./ Blue Springs South HS) added 31 assists and 12 digs. Erin Mitchem (Spokane, Mo./Spokane HS) netted her first collegiate double-double with 15 kills and 10 digs.

The story was much different in match two for the Lions. As a team they hit .306 and swept the Bearcats by the scores of 30-20, 30-20 and 30-17. Woods and Hoffmeister each had 12 kills, while Woods hit .522 for the match and Hoffmeister had 15 digs. Ashley Hill (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs HS) added 11 kills and 14 digs. Joles and Mitchem both picked up double-doubles, while Norman added 15 digs.

Norman was a defensive machine during the four matches. She averaged 6.88 digs per game and that earned her the Most Valuable Player trophy. Woods was also named to the All-Tournament team.

Southern comes back home to start MIAA play this Tuesday, September 5, when the Lions play host to Emporia State at 7 p.m. in Young Gym.
