FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Joplin, MO -- Tessa Woods (Joplin, MO/Missouri State) had 17 kills and hit .517, as the Missouri Southern Lion volleyball team defeated Emporia State in four games tonight, 3-1. Individual game scores were 23-30, 30-21, 30-24, and 30-28. After dropping game one and hitting just .094 as a team, Southern (9-1, 1-0 MIAA) rebounded to hit .333 in game two and even the match at one game. In game three, the Lions found themselves down 15-11, but after an Emporia (4-5, 0-1 MIAA) service error, Ashley Hill (Blue Springs, MO/Blue Springs HS) served out 10 straight points for Southern and gave the Lions a 21-15 lead. The Hornets cut the lead to four at 27-23, but Southern scored three of the next four points to win. The Lion defense held Emporia to attack averages of .091, .059 and .119 over the final three games. Southern had 13 team blocks led by seven from Ashley Mehrer (Kansas City, MO/Winnetonka HS). Ashley Wright (Everton, MO/Miller HS) had five blocks and six kills. Woods had 17 kills and three blocks, while Sarah Hoffmeister (Joplin, MO/Joplin HS) added 12 kills and 7 digs. Hill had nine kills and 15 digs, while Cherie Baugh (Joplin, MO/Joplin HS) added nine kills and five blocks. Sarah Joles (Blue Springs, MO/Blue Springs HS) and Erin Mitchem (Spokane, MO/Spokane HS) added 31 and 18 assists, respectively. Megan Norman (Stockton, MO/NEO) had a match-high 26 digs. The Lions will be back in action this
weekend playing in the Abilene Christian Tournament. Southern faces
Angelo State and Lubbock Christian on Friday while taking on Abilene
Christian and Ouachita Baptist on Saturday.
