Lions sweep through Abilene Christian Tournament

Abilene, Texas -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team made it four straight sweeps today as they brought out the brooms in three game wins over both Abilene Christian and Ouachita Baptist. The Lions went 4-0 at the tournament and won its third event this year.

Southern (13-1) got things going against the host Abilene Christian Wildcats, defeating ACU (3-7) in sound fashion. Individual game scores were 30-24, 30-18 and 30-25. The Lions held ACU to a .168 attack average and had 15 team blocks led by seven from Ashley Wright (Everton, MO/Miller HS).

Tessa Woods (Joplin, MO/Joplin HS) continued her hot hitting with 12 kills and just one error for a .524 hitting percentage. Ashley Mehrer (Kansas City, MO/Winnetonka HS) and Cherrie Baugh (Joplin, MO/Joplin HS) had nine and eight kills, respectively. Mehrer and Baugh had five and four blocks. Sarah Joles (Blue Springs, MO/ Blue Springs HS) had 41 assists, while Megan Norman (Stockton, MO/NEO) had a match-high 26 digs. Sarah Hoffmeister (Joplin, MO/Joplin HS) added eight kills and nine digs.

Woods brought her A game again, leading the Lions to a win over Ouachita Baptist. Individual game scores were 30-18, 30-21, and 30-18. The senior had 18 kills, just one error and hit .567. The Lions hit .344 as a team and limited OBU (7-5) to just a .080 attack average.

Wright had 12 kills and three blocks, while hitting .550. Hoffmeister added nine kills and 12 digs, while Mehrer had nine kills, hitting .533 for the match. Joles had 42 assists and Norman added a match-high 18 digs.

The Lions led from start to finish in both games one and three. Southern is off to its best start since 1986 when the team started 16-0. The team will be back in action on Friday, September 15 when they travel to Fort Hays State for a 7 p.m. start.
