Lions lose at 8th ranked Washburn, 3-1

Topeka, KS -- Despite out blocking and out killing eighth ranked Washburn, the Missouri Southern Volleyball team fell on the road tonight, three games to one. The loss put Washburn in sole possession of first place in the MIAA West.

Southern (14-2, 2-1 MIAA) held Washburn close the first two games, losing 28-30, and 26-30. Neither team hit particularly well, with the Lady Blues putting up a .164 and .103 attack average in the first two games, while Southern hit .100 in game one and .145 in game two.

The Lions came together in game three, limiting Washburn (14-2, 3-0 MIAA) to a .085 attack average and beating the Lady Blues soundly, 30-19. Southern hit .264 as a team in the game.

Washburn jumped out to a 15-11 lead in game four, before the Lions tied the game at 19, one of ten tied scores in the game. The game would be tied again at 24, 25 and 26, before Southern took a 27-26 lead on a kill from Sarah Hoffmeister (Joplin, MO/Joplin HS). Washburn again tied the game at 27 and again at 28 and 29, before the Lady Blues' Kate Hampson served out the final two points of the match.

Tessa Woods (Joplin, MO/Joplin HS) had a match-high 23 kills and hit .400. Megan Norman (Stockton, MO/NEO) had 33 digs, while Ashley Wright (Everton, MO/Miller HS) added 12 kills and hit .357.  Sarah Joles (Blue Springs, MO/Blue Springs South HS) had a match-high 54 assists and added 12 digs. Ashley Hill (Blue Springs, MO/Blue Springs HS) had 25 digs, while Sarah Hoffmeister (Joplin, MO/Joplin HS) added 10 kills and 22 digs. Ashley Mehrer had 10 kills while Kari Hammerbacher had a career-high 11 digs.

The Lions will be back in action this Tuesday, September 19 when they head to Bolivar to take on Southwest Baptist at 7 p.m.
