Lions come from behind to defeat Southwest Baptist, 3-2

Bolivar, MO -- The Missouri Southern Lions dropped games one and two by the scores of 29-31 and 26-30, but rebounded and took the next three games at Southwest Baptist University tonight, 30-20, 30-27 and 17-15 to defeat the Bearcats three games to two.

After going down 2-0, the Lions (15-2, 3-1 MIAA) hit .364 as a team in game three and easily defeated SBU 30-20. The game was tied six times but after the last tie at 15 apiece, the Lions went on a 15-5 run to end the game.

Southern hit just .135 as a team in game four, but limited SBU (5-13, 1-4 MIAA) to an .073 attack average. The Lions trailed 20-15 in the game, but fought back and tied the game at 23 on a service ace from Sarah Joles (Blue Springs, MO/Blue Springs South HS). The game would be tied again at 24 and 25, but Southern took the lead for good and won game four on a kill from Sarah Hoffmeister (Joplin, MO/Joplin HS).

The Bearcats jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game five and the game would be tied at 10 before four straight SBU points gave the Bearcats match point. The Lions responded and after a block from Ashley Wright (Everton, MO/Miller HS), Joles served out four straight points and Southern was up 15-14. The Bearcats tied the game again at 15, but two straight points from Southern gave the Lions the come from behind victory.

Tessa Woods (Joplin, MO/Joplin HS) led the scoring attack for the Lions with 26 kills and hit .396. She had five blocks and six digs. Hoffmeister had 15 kills and 19 digs, while Joles had 55 assists and 12 digs. Megan Norman (Stockton, MO/NEO) had a match-high 25 digs on the night, while Ashley Hill (Blue Springs, MO/Blue Springs HS) added 19 digs.

Southern is back in action this Friday night as they play host to Pittsburg State at 7 p.m. in Young Gym.
