Woods, Mehrer lead Southern to four game win over PSU

Joplin, MO -- Tessa Woods (Joplin, MO/Joplin HS) and Ashley Mehrer (Kansas City, MO/Winnetonka HS) combined for 15 blocks and the Missouri Southern volleyball team defeated visiting Pittsburg State tonight, three games to one in front of more than 1,000 fans at Young Gym.

Southern (16-2, 4-1 MIAA) started strong and took games one and two by the scores of 30-20 and 30-27. PSU captured a tight game three, 30-28, but the Lions rebounded to take game four, 30-27. Southern had 14 team blocks.

PSU (8-8, 1-4 MIAA) helped the Lions out with 46 free points tonight (12 service errors, 34 attack errors). Pamela Cartagena had 21 kills and 14 digs for the Gorillas, while Sammie Williams added 20 kills and hit .341. Setter Sarah Brannock had 63 assists.

Woods led the offensive barrage for the Lions with 17 kills and just two errors for a .577 attack average. She added seven blocks. Mehrer had 11 kills, hit .320 and had eight blocks. Ashley Hill (Blue Springs, MO/Blue Springs HS) added 12 kills and 10 digs, while Megan Norman (Stockton, MO/NEO) added a match high 23 digs. Sarah Hoffmeister (Joplin, MO/Joplin HS) had 16 digs, while Sarah Joles (Blue Springs, MO/Blue Springs South HS) had 34 assists. Erin Mitchem (Spokane, MO/Spokane HS) had 20 assists.

The Lions will be back in action tomorrow, September 23 when they play host to Harding at 11 am and Drury at 2 pm.
