FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Joplin, MO -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team moved to 18-2 today after sweeping matches with Harding University and Drury. Southern (18-2) opened up the day with a tough match against Harding. The Bisons came into the match 12-3, but Southern turned up the defense and swept the Bisions by the scores of 30-27, 30-26 and 30-27. Southern limited Harding to a hitting percentage of .094 in game three and hit .286 as a team. Ashley Mehrer (Kansas City, MO/Winnetonka HS) and Tessa Woods (Joplin, MO/Joplin HS) both had 11 kills, with woods hitting .526 in the match and Mehrer .400. They both had five blocks each. Cherie Baugh (Joplin, MO/Joplin, HS) had 10 kills, while Megan Norman (Stockton, MO/NEO) had a match high 15 digs. Sarah Hoffmeister (Joplin, MO/Joplin, HS) had 11 digs, while Sarah Joles (Blue Springs, MO/Blue Springs South HS) added 10 assists. Erin Mitchem (Spokane, MO/Spokane HS) had 18 assists of her own. It was much of the same in the day's second match with the Lions sweeping Drury by the scores of 30-12, 30-26 and 30-15. Woods again led the offensive attack with 11 kills and a .391 attack average. Joles had 29 assists, while Norman had a match high 17 digs. The Lions held Drury (6-13) to a -.039 attack average for the match including -.341 in game one. Southern had 10 blocks in the match with six from Ashley Wright (Everton, MO/Miller HS). Southern will be back in action on Wednesday, September 27, playing host to Northwest Missouri at 7 p.m. in Young Gym.
