Lions take down Bearcats in four games

Joplin, MO -- The 25th ranked Missouri Southern Volleyball team dropped game one tonight to Northwest Missouri, but rebounded to win the final three and defeated the Bearcats, three games to one.

Southern (19-2, 5-1 MIAA) fell behind early and couldn't overcome a hot-hitting Bearcat squad that had a team attack average of .378 in game one. The Lions would lose game one, 30-23, but Southern responded in game two and hit .413 as a team, limiting Northwest to a .222 hitting percentage. The Lions would win the final three games by the scores of 30-19, 30-22 and 30-18.

Northwest (7-12, 1-5 MIAA) had 20 kills and 11 digs from MacKenzie Heston. Sarah Trowbridge had 19 kills and 17 digs, while Molly Hankins had 55 assists and 13 digs.

The Lions were led by Ashley Mehrer (Kansas City, MO/Winnetonka HS) with 16 kills, five blocks and an attack average of .462. Tessa Woods (Joplin, MO/Joplin HS) added 13 kills and four blocks, while hitting a match-high .524. Ashley Wright (Everton, MO/Miller HS) had 12 kills and four blocks, while Ashley Hill (Blue Springs, MO/Blue Springs HS) had a double-double with 11 kills and 15 digs. Megan Norman (Stockton, MO/Stockton HS) had 22 digs, and Sarah Joles (Blue Springs, MO/Blue Springs South HS) had 37 assists. Erin Mitchem (Spokane, MO/Spokane HS) had 21 assists.

The Lions will be back in action tomorrow night when they play host to 19th ranked Southern Illinois-Edwardsville at 7 p.m. in Young Gym.
