Lions fall to 19th ranked Southern Illinois

Joplin, MO -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team won game one 31-29, but dropped the final three games by the scores of 28-30, 26-30, and 20-30 and fell at home tonight to the 19th ranked Southern Illinois-Edwardsville Cougars.

Southern (19-3) came into the match ranked 25th in the country and undefeated at home, but poor passing and errors doomed the Lions from the start. Southern hit just .175 as a team, while the Cougars hit .249 and had 13 team blocks led by eight from Kim Potthast.

SIUE (16-3) setter Mallory Clements had a triple double with 10 kills, 51 assists and 13 digs, while hitting .364. Kelsey Hubert had 16 kills and hit .429, leading five Cougars in double-figures for kills.

Neither team hit particularly well, but the Cougars surged ahead in the deciding game four behind a .400 attack average.

Cherrie Baugh (Joplin, MO/Joplin HS) had a team-high 13 kills and hit .522 for the match. Ashley Mehrer (Kansas City, MO/Winnetonka HS) had 11 kills and no errors, hitting .647 for the match. She added six blocks. Tessa Woods (Joplin, MO/Joplin HS) had 13 kills, while Ashley Hill (Blue Springs, MO/Blue Springs HS) had 11 kills and Sarah Joles (Blue Springs, MO/Blue Springs South HS) added 36 assists. Megan Norman (Stockton, MO/Stockton HS) and Sarah Hoffmeister (Joplin, MO/Joplin HS) added 22 and 10 digs, respectively. Erin Mitchem (Spokane, MO/Spokane HS) had 19 assists.

Southern will be back in action this Saturday, September 30 when the Lions play host to 11th ranked Central Missouri at noon in Young Gym.
