Lions come up short at second ranked Truman

Kirksville, MO -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team played its third-straight ranked opponent tonight, and went to extra points with the Bulldogs in game two, but fell on the road at second ranked Truman State, three games to none. Individual game scores were 30-21, 32-30, and 30-25.

Southern (19-5, 5-3 MIAA) dropped the first set, but came around in game two, trading points with the Bulldogs and eventually going up 28-26. Truman, however, scored two quick points to tie the game at 28. The Bulldogs then went ahead 29-28, before Southern tied the game on a kill from Cherie Baugh (Joplin, MO/Joplin HS). The Lions went ahead on a Truman attack error forcing the Bulldogs to call back-to-back timeouts. The strategy paid off, however, as Truman scored the three points to take game two.

Truman (21-1, 8-0 MIAA) faced another strong attack from the Lions in game three, but eventually went ahead 7-6 in game three. Southern cut the lead to 27-25 on a kill from Ashley Wright (Everton, MO/Miller HS), but the Bulldogs went on a 3-0 run to end match. Truman was led by a triple double from setter Kelsey Wackerman. She had 11 kills, 27 assists and 13 digs, while hitting .345.

Tessa Woods (Joplin, MO/Joplin HS) led the offensive attack for the Lions with 10 kills. Katie Gage (Lamar, MO/Lamar HS) and Sarah Hoffmeister (Joplin, MO/Joplin HS) each had six kills. Megan Norman (Stockton, MO/Stockton HS) had 20 digs, while Sarah Joles (Blue Springs, MO/Blue Springs South HS) added 18 assists.

The Lions will travel to Missouri Western tomorrow for a 2 pm match with the Griffons.
