FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Joplin, MO -- Missouri Southern got 14 kills apiece from sisters Tessa Woods (Joplin, MO/Joplin HS) and Cherie Baugh (Joplin, M/Joplin HS) but couldn't hold off 15th ranked Washburn and fell to the Lady Blues, three games to one tonight at Young Gym. Individual game scores were 19-30, 25-30, 30-24, 22-30. Southern (22-9, 6-5 MIAA) tied the score nine times in game one, but Washburn pulled away and limited the Lions to just .086 hitting in the opening frame, winning, 30-19. The Lions hit much better in game two with an attack average of .278 and limited the Lady Blues to just .209. There were nine tied scores and seven lead changes over the game, with Washburn prevailing. Washubrn (24-6, 9-3 MIAA) dropped game three to the Lions, hitting .148 as a team, but rebounded to finish out the match in four. Tessa Jones had 19 kills to lead the Lady Blues, while Mandi Cox had 13 kills, six blocks and hit .375. Setter Katie Hampson had 57 assists and 12 digs, while Erica Cowhick and Bailey Saal had 21 and 18 assists, respectively. Woods hit .407 for the match and added five digs and three blocks. Sarah Joles (Blue Springs, MO/Blue Springs South HS) had 41 assists and six digs, while Megan Norman (Stockton, MO/Stockton HS) added to her record-breaking digs total with 27. Ashley Mehrer (Kansas City, MO/Winnetonka HS) and Sarah Hoffmeister (Joplin, MO/Joplin HS) each had nine kills. The Lions will be back in action this Wednesday, October 25, traveling to Pittsburg State for a 7 pm matchup.
