FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Pittsburg, Kan. -- Sarah Hoffmeister (Joplin, MO/Joplin HS) and Cherie Baugh (Joplin, MO/Joplin HS) had 17 and 16 kills, respectively, but the Missouri Southern volleyball team fell on the road tonight at Pittsburg State, three games to two. Individual game scores were 20-30, 30-27, 23-30, 30-26, 10-15. Southern (22-10, 6-6 MIAA) had its hopes of hosting a first round MIAA tournament match possibly tarnished tonight as this loss, coupled with an Emporia State win at Washburn, placed the Lions on the outside going into the final match at home this Saturday against Fort Hays. If both PSU and the Lions defeat Fort Hays this weekend, the two teams, along with ESU will all be 7-6, with the MIAA's tiebreaker taking effect. Early math suggests that will place the Loins at either third or fourth in the MIAA West. Both teams traded points in games three and four and PSU (20-10, 6-6 MIAA) went ahead 5-0 in game five, en route to the deciding win. Laura Toman had 23 kills and eight digs, while Pamela Cartagena had 22 kills and 29 digs. Setter Sarah Brannock had 69 assists and Klaudia Grelowska added 21 kills. Hoffmeister added 21 digs to go with her 17 kills. Megan Norman (Stockton, MO/Stockton HS) had 28 digs, while Sarah Joles (Blue Springs, MO/Blue Springs South HS) added 52 assists and nine digs. Ashley Mehrer (Kansas City, MO/Winnetonka HS) and Tessa Woods (Joplin, MO/Joplin HS) added 11 and 12 kills, respectively. The Lions will finish the regular season this Saturday with a 4 p.m. match at home against Fort Hays State. It will be Senior Day and Southern will recognize its three graduating seniors: Woods, Mehrer and Norman.
