Lions Volleyball Splits In First Day Of Southern Invite

Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern Volleyball team opened up the day with a 3-0 win over Angelo State, but suffered a setback in the nightcap, falling three games to one to Central Oklahoma.

The Lions hit an impressive .340 in their first match against Angelo State and were led by Cherie Baugh with 11 kills and four digs. She hit .500 in the match. Sarah Hoffmeister hit .333 with 15 kills and 11 digs, while Erin Mitchem laid out 36 assists and Jeanna Feldman scored 10 digs. Ashley Wright had nine kills. The game scores were 30-16, 30-20 and 30-24.

The Lions hit .542 to open the match 16 kills and just three errors in game one. They followed that up with a .312 attack average in game two and had 17 kills in game three.

Southern started well against Central Oklahoma, winning game one 30-24, but hit just. 036, .133 and .179 in the final three games and fell to the Brochos three games to one. Individual game scores were 30-24, 28-30, 25-30, and 26-30.

Baugh once again led the Lions' attack with 15 kills, as both Feldman and Hoffmeister chipped in with eight kills and 13 digs apiece. Amy Barnicle had a match high 22 digs, while Mitchem and Sarah Joles had 34 and 14 assists, respectively. Freshman Brittany Vavao-Huggins had six kills and hit .400 in just two games.

Neither team hit well as Southern had a .135 attack average to UCO's .168.

The Lions will be back in action tomorrow as the play host to Missouri-St. Louis at noon and Drury at 5 pm.
