Lions Volleyball Splits at TWU Invitational

Denton, Texas -- The Missouri Southern Volleyball team started the day strong, defeating the University of Texas of the Permian Basin three games to none, but fell to Central Oklahoma for the second time in a week, 3-1, splitting its matches in the first day of the Texas Woman's University Invitational.

Southern (4-3) took down UTPB in three games in the first match of the day. The Lions won 30-28, 30-23 and 30-27. Sarah Hoffmeister and Ashlee Russell both had double-doubles in the match. Hoffmeister racked up 15 kills and 15 digs, while Russell had 10 kills and 11 digs. Amy Barnicle and Jeanna Feldman had 12 and 10 digs, respectively, while Sarah Joles added 32 assists.

For the second time in a week, the Lions faced off with Central Oklahoma and came away with the same result, losing three to one to the Bronchos. Southern dropped the frist two games, 30-27 and 32-30, but rebounded to win game three, 30-27. However, the Lions hit just .067 in game four and dropped the match.

Russell had another stellar match with career highs in kills (20) and digs (18). She hit .333 on the match. Kari Hammerbacher had a match high 30 digs, the first time since October of last season when Megan Norman had 37 against Arkansas Tech.

Southern out hit, out dug and out blocked UCO, but the Bronchos had 18 more kills than the Lions.

MSSU will be back in action tomorrow when they take on Harding and Texas Woman's.
