Lions sweep opening day of Harding Invitational

The Missouri Southern Volleyball team defeated both Montevallo and Eastern New Mexico today in the opening day of the Harding Invitational in Searcy. The Lions won 3-0 against Montevallo and 3-1 against ENMU.

Southern (8-3) opened the day with a straight-set win over Montevallo (3-8). Individual game scores were 30-24, 30-24, and 30-23. The Lions hit .239 as a team including a .324 mark in game two that saw Southern hit 15 kills with just three errors.

Ashley Wright had a huge match with nine kills, no errors and six blocks, while hitting .643. Sarah Hoffmeister had eight kills, 18 digs, and four aces. Sarah Joles added 31 assists, while Kari Hammerbacher had 13 digs.

The Lions finished off play by defeating Eastern New Mexico (2-9) three games to one. Individual game scores were 30-19, 26-30, 30-21 and 30-24.

Wright had another monster game hitting .526 for the match with 11 kills and only one error. Hoffmeister had a double-double with 13 kills and 13 digs, while Amelia Judge and Jeanna Feldman had 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Joles added 56 assists and two aces.

The Lions will be back in action tomorrow as they will face off with Henderson State and Harding. Both HSU and Harding split on the day. HSU lost to Washburn to start the day, before sweeping ENMU. Harding swept Montevallo, but fell victim to the broom, losing in three to Washburn.
