Southern volleyball drops two matches in Texas

. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team won the first set in both its matches today, but fell in the final three of both matches, as well, dropping contests to both Rollins College and Augustana in day two of the St. Mary's Invite in San Antonio. Match scores against Rollins were 5-25, 27-25, 25-22, 25-21, while match scores against Augustana were19-25, 27-25, 25-20, 25-17.

Southern (0-3) came out on fire and dismantled Rollins in the first set of their match today, winning 25-5. The Lions hit .462 in the set, while limiting the Tars to a negative .125 attack average. However, Rollins would win the second set in extra points, and take the next two to win the match.

Rollins (1-0) rebounded to shut down the Lions defensively and limited Southern to just a .189 average in the second set and a negative .062 mark in the fourth.

Sarah Joles had a double-double with 30 assists and 12 digs, while Ashlee Russell hit .480 and nailed home 13 kills. Amelia Judge had 10 kills and Kari Hammerbacher added 12 digs.

In the Lions' second match of the day, Southern once again came out on top in the first set, winning 25-19 and out hitting their opponent .405 to .263. However, just like in the first match, Augustana won the second set in extra points and rallied to win sets three and four to close out the match.

Joles hit .667 in the match, while dishing out 44 assists. She is now just 31 assists from moving into second place all-time at Southern. Ashley Hill had a double-double with 16 kills and 15 digs, while Russell added a double-double of her own with 14 kills and 10 digs, while hitting .387. Jeanna Feldman had 10 kills, while Hammerbacher added 15 digs.

The Lions will wrap up the tournament tomorrow with a match against Eastern New Mexico.
