Lions split in final day of MSSU Invitational

--  The Missouri Southern volleyball team played two five-set matches today and nearly won both, eventually splitting with Midwestern State and Drury. The Lions defeated Drury by the scores of 25-23, 25-22, 19-25, 19-25, and 15-9, while falling to Midwestern State, 25-19, 20-25, 25-17, 25-21, and 15-10.

Southern (3-5) started the day against undefeated Midwestern State (8-0). The Mustangs had yet to lose a set on the season, sweeping each of their first six matches. The Lions and the Mustangs split the first two sets, as both teams lead from the opening serve in their wins.

The third set saw six tied scores and four lead changes, but MWSU prevailed with a 25-17 win, before the Lions took the fourth set to tie the match at two. Both teams were tied just once in the fifth and final set, but the Mustangs controlled throughout and remained unbeaten.

Jeanna Feldman had 21 kills and eight digs in the match, while Ashley Hill and Kari Hammerbacher had 14 and 21 digs, respectively. Sarah Joles and Elin Skei had 38 and 12 assists each.

Southern started strong in its match with Drury (4-4), winning the first two sets for a commanding 2-0 lead. The Lady Panthers, however stormed back and took the third and fourth set by identical scores of 25-19, before the Lions took control in the fifth set, 15-9.

Feldman once again led the Lions with 16 kills and 12 digs, while Stephanie Williams added 14 kills and a team-high 21 digs. Joles had 36 assists, while Hammerbacher had 17 digs.

The Lions dominated the Lady Panthers defensively with 15 team blocks, including seven from Brittany Vavao-Huggins and six from Amelia Judge.

Feldman was named to the All-Tournament team as the sophomore averaged 3.39 kills per game with 61 total in the tournament. Joles moved into second place all-time in assists at Southern this tournament. She has 3,823 assists in her career at Southern and needs just 805 more this season to break the all-time mark.

The Lions will be back in action a week from tonight when they travel to Rolla to take on Missouri S&T in a 2 pm Saturday match.
