Tigers' defensive effort limits Lions as Southern falls 3-0 at Fort Hays

-- The Missouri Southern volleyball team fell victim to a tremendous defensive effort tonight and fell in three sets at Fort Hays State. Individual set scores were 25-15, 25-19 and 25-23.

The Lions (6-13, 1-6 MIAA) fell behind early as the Tigers (9-11, 2-5 MIAA ) started the first set on an 8-1 run, forcing a Southern timeout. A kill from Jeanna Feldman snapped the run, but Hays ran its lead to 17-10, forcing another Southern timeout. The score ran to 21-11, before another kill from Feldman stopped the Hays' run, but the Tigers closed the first set on a 4-1 run.

Hays started the second set on a 7-3 run, before a kill from Ameilia Judge cut the Tigers' lead to three. A Tigers' ace made the score 11-4 and FHSU ran its lead to 16-10, forcing a Southern timeout. Another kill from Judge cut the lead back to five at 20-15, but the Tigers quickly scored and forced another Lions timeout. Kara Robeson picked up a kill to cut the lead to 21-16, but the Tigers eventually won out, 25-19.

Both teams traded points and Southern took a 6-5 lead in the third set on a kill from Robeson. The Tigers took a quick lead but another kill from Robeson cut the Hays' lead to one at 15-14 and forced a Tiger timeout. A kill from Ashley Hill tied the set at 16 a piece and a kill from Ashlee Russell gave the Lions a 21-20 lead. The Lions tied it at 22 on a kill from Hill and again at 23 on a kill from Feldman, but Hays scored the final two points to take the match.

Feldman led the Lions with seven kills, while Hill picked up six kills and 11 digs. Elin Skei and Sarah Joles had 16 and 15 assists, respectively, while Kari Hammerbacher had eight digs.

The Tigers out dug the Lions 56-36 and had six blocks. Freshman Tracie Hileman led the Tigers with 13 kills and a .391 attack average.

The Lions will be back in action tomorrow evening when they head to Emporia to take on Emporia State. First serve is slated for 7 pm.
