Lions fall at home to Nebraska-Omaha, 3-1

-- The Missouri Southern volleyball team led visiting Nebraska-Omaha in virtually every offensive category, but 34 Southern errors and 12 UNO blocks did the Lions in and Southern fell at home to the Mavericks, 3-1. Individual set scores were 25-17, 30-28, 18-25, 25-18.

Southern (6-17, 1-10 MIAA) led the Mavericks (10-12, 6-5 MIAA) in kills, assists, digs and points, but committed 34 errors in the match tonight.

UNO hit .323 in the first set and took the opener easily. The second set, however, was much closer. The set was tied 11 times with three lead changes. The Lions went up 24-22 on a kill from Brittany Vavao-Huggins, but both teams would trade points until the Mavs tied it at 27 and scored the final three points to take the second set.

The third set was all Lions. Southern took a 2-1 lead on a kill from Ashley Hill and would not trail the rest of the game. The fourth set had four tied scores and three lead changes, but UNO took a 16-15 lead on a kill from Sara Kambschnieder and closed the match on a 10-3 run.

Hill led the Lions with 19 kills and 18 digs for her third double-double of the season. Huggins hit a school record .833 in the match with 10 kills and no errors in just 12 attempts. Jeanna Feldman had 13 kills and nine digs, while Kari Hammerbacher had 17 digs. Elin Skei, in just her second start of her career, had a career high with 43 assists.

Kampschnieder led the Mavs with 16 kills and 17 digs, while Ellen Thommes had 12 kills, hit .667 and added nine blocks.

The Lions will be back in action this Friday, October 24 when they travel to Warrensburg to take on Central Missouri in a 7 pm start.
