Fifth ranked Emporia State sweeps Lions

-- The Missouri Southern volleyball team fell at home to fifth ranked Emporia State tonight three sets to none. Individual set scores were 25-20, 25-15, and 25-18.

Southern (9-21, 4-14 MIAA) started out strong in game one, racing out to a 5-1 lead after an ace from Kari Hammerbacher. The Lions' lead was 16-9 after an Emporia State (29-3, 15-2 MIAA) error, but the Hornets would tie the score at 19 on a kill from Hannah Carter and go on a 6-1 run to end the set.

The Lions led 4-3 early in the second set, but hit -.029 in the frame and the Hornets capitalized, trailing just once in the entire set.

Emporia jumped out to a 9-5 lead in the third set after a block assist from Arica Shepard and Brianne Boner. Southern tied the set at 13 apiece after a Hornet hitting error, but ESU went on a 12-5 run to end the match.

Jeanna Feldman had  a team-high five kills, while Sarah Joles and Elin Skei had 14 and 11 assists, respectively. Kari Hammerbacher had 11 digs.

The Lions will go back on the road as they head to Pittsburg State on November 12 for a 7 pm match with the Gorillas.
