Lions given AVCA Team Academic Award

Lexington, Ky. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team has been named a recipient of the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award as announced by the coaches association.

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

The Lions were one of five MIAA schools given the award joining Emporia State, Pittsburg State, Nebraska-Omaha and Central Missouri. A total of just 46 schools in Division II were honored with the award.

Over 900 different schools have earned the honor in the program's 17-year history, and over 2,800 awards have been given out. Only two institutions, both high schools, have earned the distinction all 17 years: Jonesboro High School (Jonesboro, Arkansas) and Ross S. Sterling High School (Baytown, Texas).

The Lions open up the 2009 campaign with their annual Missouri Southern Invitational to be played on August 28-29 in both Young Gymnasium and the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center. The Lions open up on day one of the tourney with Midwestern State at 4 pm and Missouri S&T at 7 pm. On day two, Southern finishes off the tournament with Southeastern Oklahoma State at 10 am and Harding at 4 pm. Each of the Lions' matches will be played in Leggett & Platt.
