Lions split two in final day of Invitational

Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team split a pair of matches in the final day of the 2009 MSSU Invitational, defeating Southeastern Oklahoma State in four, but falling to Harding in five.

The Lions (3-1) took the first set against SOSU 25-23, but fell 25-17 in the second set, before winning 28-26 and 25-23 to finish out the match. Jeanna Feldman had 16 digs, while Maria Weller added 11 and hit .429. Elin Skei had 41 assists and 10 digs, while Kari Hammerbacher had a match-high 15 digs.

The Harding Bisons came from behind against Southern in the final game, taking the final three games after Southern had gone up 2-0 early on. The Lions won games one and two, by the scores of 25-18 and 25-12, while dropping the final three by the scores of 25-15, 27-25, and 16-14.

The Lions had four register double-figures in kills, led by freshman Renee Rheinecker's 18. Feldman added 15 kills and nine digs, while Amelia Judge and Brittany Vavao-Huggins had 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Skei had 50 assists, while Hammerbacher added 28 digs. The Lions had 14 team blocks in the loss.

Southern will be back in action when they travel to Arkansas-Fort Smith on September 4.
