FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Fort Smith, Ark. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team won the first set convincingly and rallied to force a fifth and deciding set, but couldn't put away Arkansas Fort Smith today and fell three sets to two. Individual set scores were 25-16, 25-27, 23-25, 28-26 and 13-15. Southern (3-2) hit .240 in the first set and with the exception of two tied scores, led throughout the opening frame and won 25-16. The Lions held Fort Smith (5-1) to a .000 hitting average in the first set as Brittany Vavao-Huggins combined for seven kills and just one error in the set. UAFS, however stormed back and won two close sets to take a 2-1 lead, but the Lions returned the favor in the fourth set, as a kill from Jeanna Feldmann clinched the set for Southern and forced the fifth and deciding set. Southern led 8-7 at the turn and the set was tied four more times, the last time at 11 each, but UAFS scored the next two points to take a 13-11 lead. The Lions got as close as 14-13, but UAFS put it away on the next rally. Renee Rheinecker led the Lions with 17 kills and hit .262. Elin Skei had a double double with 40 assists and 13 digs, while Vavao-Huggins had 11 kills. Kari Hammerbacher had 21 digs and Amelia Judge added seven blocks. The Lions will be back in action when Southern travels to Edmond, Okla. next weekend to participate in the Central Oklahoma Tournament. |
