FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Edmond, Okla. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team dropped a match to Arkansas Fort-Smith, 3-1, but rebounded to win a dog fight against Central Oklahoma, 3-2 today in the first day of the UCO Invite. Southern (4-3) started the day playing Arkansas-Fort Smith (7-1) for the second time in a row, but could not tame the Lions and lost three sets to one. Individual set scores were 19-25, 14-25, 25-19 and 19-25. Renee Rheinecker led the Lions with 12 kills, while Ashlee Russell added 10 of her own and hit .474. Elin Skei dished out 39 assists, while Kari Hammerbacher and Ali Boehler had 12 and 10 digs, respectively. Jeanna Feldmann had a huge match in the Lions' second action of the day as she had a double-double with 24 kills and 16 digs, while hitting .333 for the match. The Lions beat Central Oklahoma (5-4) three games to two and the individual set scores were 18-25, 25-20, 20-25, 25-17, 15-8. Both teams started out hot in the first set with the Bronchos hitting .452 and winning, while the Lions hit .419. The teams split the first three sets, but the Lions hit .448 in the fourth set and a commanding .667 in the deciding fifth set to seal the win. Southern had 10 kills and no errors in the final set. Rheinecker joined Feldmann as one of four Lions with double-figure kills. She had 15 in the match, while Brittany Vavao Huggins and Russell had 11 and 10, respectively. Skei dished out a career-high 60 assists and added 11 digs, while Hammerbacher had 12 digs of her own. The Lions hit .307 as a team and had 10 more digs and 19 more kills than the Bronchos. Southern will be back in action tomorrow when they face off with St. Edwards at 9:30 am and Southeastern Oklahoma at 6 pm. |
