Lions swept at 11th ranked Central Missouri

Warrensburg, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team kept it close in the first set, but the 11th ranked Central Missouri Jennies were too much for the Lions and Southern fell, three sets to none tonight at the Multipurpose Building in Warrensburg. Individual scores were 23-25, 13-25, 14-25.

The Lions (5-6, 0-2 MIAA) jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the first set and led again at 10-7 after a kill from Renee Rheinecker. An UCM (12-3, 2-1 MIAA) tied the set at 10 and the Lions jumped ahead at 13-12 after a kill from Ashlee Russell. Central tied it at 13 and took the lead at 14-13 and would lead from that point on. The first set saw seven tied scores and five lead chances

The second and third sets were all Jennies as Central hit .344 and .306 in the final two sets, holding the Lions to .031 and .194.

Russell led the Lions with 11 kills, five of which came in the first set where Russell had seven of her 15 digs on the night. She also hit a team-high .400. Elin Skei had 28 assists, while Kari Hammerbacher had a match-high 18 digs.

The Lions will be back in action a week from tonight when they travel to Kirksville to take on 19th ranked Truman at 7 pm on September 25.
